PSYCHIATRIC ANNALS 38:12 | DECEMBER 2008 In 1993, several of the authors of this issue of Psychiatric Annals wrote an article titled “Some Conceptual and Statistical Issues in the Analysis of Longitudinal Psychiatric Data.” The article provided a timely discussion and illustration of newly developed mixed-effects regression models for the analysis of longitudinal psychiatric data. The article has now been cited more than 500 times. Not only has the article been used to inform the psychiatric research community, but it has been widely cited throughout the medical literature. Well, we’re back, and in this issue, we focus on topics that have arisen in the analysis of longitudinal data over the past 15 years that we as statisticians believe are important for the progress of medical research in general, and psychiatric research in particular. Specifi cally, we focus on sample size determination for clustered and/or longitudinal studies; the role of the intent-to-treat principle in longitudinal studies and various alternatives; conceptual and experimental design issues related to missing data in longitudinal studies; advances in the analysis of longitudinal data that insulate inferences from the effects of missing data; and balancing treatment and comparison groups in longitudinal studies. Each of these areas has been the focus of considerable statistical research, and advances made in these areas

Bayesian Sample size Determination for Longitudinal Studies with Continuous Response using Marginal Models
Introduction Longitudinal study designs are common in a lot of scientific researches, especially in medical, social and economic sciences. The reason is that longitudinal studies allow researchers to measure changes of each individual over time and often have higher statistical power than cross-sectional studies. Choosing an appropriate sample size is a crucial step in a successful study. A st...
متن کاملA new virtual leader-following consensus protocol to internal and string stability analysis of longitudinal platoon of vehicles with generic network topology under communication and parasitic delays
In this paper, a new virtual leader following consensus protocol is introduced to perform the internal and string stability analysis of longitudinal platoon of vehicles under generic network topology. In all previous studies on multi-agent systems with generic network topology, the control parameters are strictly dependent on eigenvalues of network matrices (adjacency or Laplacian). Since some ...
متن کاملNonlocal Analysis of Longitudinal Dynamic Behavior of Nanobars with Surface Energy Effect
Due to considerable stored energy in surfaces of nano-scales in comparison with the stored energy in their bulk, considering the surface energy is necessary for the analysis of various behaviors of nano-scales for more precise design and manufacturing. In this article, the longitudinal dynamic behavior of nanobars in the presence of the surface energy parameters is studied. To this end, the lon...
متن کاملError Analysis, Design and Modeling of an Improved Heterodyne Nano-Displacement Interferometer
A new heterodyne nano-displacement with error reduction is presented. The main errors affecting the displacement accuracy of the nano-displacement measurement system including intermodulation distortion error, cross-talk error, cross-polarization error and phase detection error are calculated. In the designed system, a He-Ne laser having three-longitudinal-mode is considered as the stabiliz...
متن کاملLongitudinal Magnetic Field Effect on Torsional Vibration of Carbon Nanotubes
Torsional dynamic analysis of carbon nanotubes under the effect of longitudinal magnetic field is carried out in the present study. Torque effect of an axial magnetic field on a carbon nanotube has been defined using Maxwell’s relation. Nonlocal governing equation and boundary conditions for carbon nanotubes are obtained by using Hamilton’s minimum energy principle. Eringen’s nonlocal stress gr...
متن کاملMarginal Analysis of A Population-Based Genetic Association Study of Quantitative Traits with Incomplete Longitudinal Data
A common study to investigate gene-environment interaction is designed to be longitudinal and population-based. Data arising from longitudinal association studies often contain missing responses. Naive analysis without taking missingness into account may produce invalid inference, especially when the missing data mechanism depends on the response process. To address this issue in the ana...
